Our mantra should be: ‘Son and daughter, be equal’. “Let’s celebrate the birth of a daughter. We should be just as proud of our daughters. Please plant five plants when your daughter is born.” -PM Narendra Modi to the people of his adopted village Jaipur. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was launched by the Chief Minister on January 22, 2015 at Panipat, Haryana. The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao addresses the declining child sex ratio (CSR) and related issues in women’s empowerment across the life cycle. This is a triple project effort by the Departments of Women and Child Development, Health, Family Welfare and Human Resource Development.

The key elements of the program include introduction of PC & PNDT Act in Phase I, nationwide awareness campaign and various initiatives in 100 selected districts (non-CSR) with emphasis on mindset change greater with training, awareness, awareness and community mobilization ground. The NDA government is trying to bring about a change in the way our society views the girl child. In his Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi praised a sarpanch from Bibipur in Haryana who launched the ‘Selfie with Daughter’ scheme. The PM also urged people to share their selfies with the girls and it quickly became a global sensation. People from all over India and the world shared their selfies with the girls, making it a proud moment for all those who have daughters.

Since the launch of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, regional multi-sectoral action plans have been implemented in almost all the states. Capacity building programs and training have been provided for trainers to further strengthen the capacity of senior management and frontline staff in the region. Ministry of Women and Child Development has conducted nine such batches of training covering all states/unions from April-October, 2015. They welcome various steps taken by Pithoragarh district to protect the girl child and enable her to study in Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme under the recognition. Regional task forces and block task forces have been constituted. Sessions of these sessions have been developed & clear roadmaps have been developed and linked to child gender theory. Awareness raising activities are being carried out to expand the program more widely in order to reach out to the entire community.

Various seminars have been organized with special participation of schools, military academies, employees of government departments etc and Street performances are also being organized in Pithoragarh to create awareness about Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. These street performances are organized not only in villages but also in markets to expose them to larger audiences. Through storytelling, people are made aware of the problems of sex-selective abortion. Through these street performances, issues related to the girl child and her series of hardships throughout her life have been well depicted. Through signature drives and pledge oaths, Beti Bacho Beti Padhao has reached out to 700 students of PGs and many army personnel A scheme has been launched in Mansa district of Punjab to motivate its girls to study. Under the ‘Udan – Sapneya di Duniya de Rubaru (Udan- Live your dream One Day)’ initiative, the Mansa government is inviting proposals from girls in classes VI-XII. These girls get a chance to spend a day in the profession they want to be — doctors, police officers, engineers, IAS and PPS officers and so on The program has received a great response, with over 70 students already having the opportunity to spend a day with a professional, see work in a professional environment and be helped to make informed decisions about their future career choices.
